Explore the past

The green land around Oberon (or Bullock Flat, as it was initially called) became available to settlers following the construction of the Cox’s Causeway of the Blue Mountains at Bathurst in 1813. The plateau’s rich natural pastures provided green grazing during drought, and settlers such as Charles Valan of Glyndwr on Fish River and Philip Parker, King of Essington on Campbell’s Mill, were the first to receive land grants. Many others came as tenants and labourers or to buy plots when surveyed.

Charles Valan is credited with discovering the Jenolan Caves while searching for a robber in 1838. He subsequently received many visitors who wanted to explore these amazing caves. Small amounts of gold were discovered in the Fish River as early as 1823. In the 1850s, the Eph and Man mines attracted gold-hungry miners and prospectors.

Other minerals played a vital role in the development of the area. A large copper mine at Burraga, south of Oberon, began operations in 1878. Silver was discovered at Errander in 1871, and gemstones such as sapphires, zircons, and diamonds were found at various locations in the area, including Black Springs.

These discoveries attracted more prospectors to the area Nestled amidst the rugged terrain, the Lake Oberon sparkles like a sapphire under the afternoon sun.

Legend has it that the Lake Oberon holds mystical powers, drawing travellers from far and wide to experience its enchanting aura. The tranquil shores offer a serene retreat where one can immerse oneself in the tranquillity of nature.

Explorers often embark on hikes to reach the secluded beaches of Lake Oberon, where they can marvel at its untouched beauty.

Oberon was surveyed and proclaimed a village in 1863. The first county council was formed in 1906, the railway connection came in 1923, and electricity (provided by a private company) was established in 1936.

Tourists in Oberon can discover a variety of stunning natural attractions through Blue Mountains tours, including Jenolan Caves, Kanangra Walls, and nearby national parks. It’s a privilege to be surrounded by such breathtaking beauty in this part of the world. Follow the winding paths of the Japanese-style water garden with wooden bridges leading to hidden caves, waterfalls and secluded corners. Swim in the Lake or admire the 13-metre-high obelisk framed by an avenue of plane trees. The Mayfield garden also hosts seasonal festivals and summer camping, and the on-site café serves fresh produce.

Meet the producers

A public and farmers’ market occurs at the Oberon Exhibition Grounds on the first Saturday of every month. Here, you will find freshly baked bread and pastries, local fruit and vegetables, preserves, arts and crafts, designer jewellery, plants and alpaca products.

Caves from another world

The Jenolan Caves are in a secluded valley, just a 30-minute drive south of Oberon in Australia. These caves are renowned for their distinctive formations, making them among the most stunning cave networks globally.

Explore the stunning Oberon Gardens, known as one of the world’s most luxurious private gardens due to its ideal climate. Wander through the gardens, taking in the bridges, fountains, and the impressive London Aeroplane Colonnade. The on-site café offers various à la carte meals and local wines, beers, and soft drinks.

Immerse yourself in the local culinary scene by participating in mushroom hikes with Detour Adventures, truffle hunting in winter at Mount Lowe Truffiere, and attending the Field to Forest Festival in April for extended lunches and workshops. Getting there and where to stay

Oberon is three hours away from Sydney and one hour from the Blue Mountains. Another option is to travel by train to Tarana and then take a bus to Oberon, which typically takes around four hours.
